sashayed (sashayed) wrote in shoebox_project,

i'm rushing from thing to thing today so this is gonna be short, but dorkorific can't be recovered at the moment (ETA 2: omg yes it can, it's me again, GO TEAM. all is back under control there as of now. but i'm still feeling a little freaked, so, you know, whatever; i'm gonna keep using sashayed mostly, for now. ANYWAY) as it was explained to me today in an email from abuse, "The problem here is that is apparently allowing old usernames to be recycled. Someone can register an old email that was validated on an account, and request an email reset. This appears to be the case with your account 'dorkorific'." but it appears that, until something else goes wrong, i now have control over the community, so, you know, EAT IT, EVERYBODY ELSE.

if any other entries DO appear here, and they link to external sources, PLEASE don't click on them. (the only non-lj site i'd send you to is the incredible lomara's .pdf files of the shoebox chapters, an awesome resource which you can find linked somewhere in cult_sbp.) when we get the entries back, ladyjaida and i will both confirm that we've done so.

to anyone who DID click on those links, this is the important thing, via copperbadge, to whom this also happened:

A number of people found keyloggers on their computers after they clicked the russian poetry site link. A few people actually attempted to translate it (the poem is about eating shit, apparently) and are regretting it. We are advising people to go to and download the free Spyware Doctor and run a scan, also running a scan via Housecall if they don't have an installed antivirus program on your computer.

i'm so sorry about all of this, everyone. and, okay, i lied, since i have no time to do anything similarly helpful there will be just one link: to copperbadge's amazingly useful entry on his version of this whole ordeal. (MAYBE HOVER OVER IT WITH YOUR MOUSE BEFORE YOU CLICK JUST TO MAKE SURE I AM NOT LYING, THIS IS A GOOD HABIT FOR THE FUTURE TOO.)

so basically, 1. download a solid antivirus program; 2. check any hotmail accounts you have to make sure they haven't lapsed, 3. change your passwords and set a security question, and 4. don't click on anything you're not sure about.

love you guys. more to come!

ETA ONE THING: this happened to me because i, stupidly, wasn't monitoring which email addresses were linked to my account. i don't think this is unusual, with longstanding ljs, since I hadn't used the hotmail account in question for years and years and years; but even though it's pretty normal behavior, it's (obviously!) not good. so it's worth it for all of you to check and make sure you aren't giving a vulnerable email access to your journal:

Does anyone know if Jaida ever posts online anymore?
I imagine she's extremely busy, but I was curious. She used to update from time to time on her LJ, but it's been untouched for a significant amount of time. Sad! =(
all I know are the occasional interviews about the Havemercy verse, which aren't exactly her posting online. There's also, but that doesn't even mention Dragon Soul being out, so uh I think it's safe to say that it's a bit out of date.

I miss this fic.

I remember hearing about this fic back in high school, maybe around 2005, and thinking 'no, reading Harry Potter fanfiction is going too far'. Five years later, here I am reading this fic, and I just have to say it's not unpleasant. In fact, it's wonderful.

I know that this is the internet, who cares, and if you're anything like me, there's a bit of embarrassment about touching old writing, but I think it's a bit tragic to leave this fic just hanging in limbo. It's obviously taken a lot of work, so maybe just post the PDFs and leave a few parting words? Fans would appreciate it :)

Much love <3
Guys. guys c'mon.

C'mon here.

You could totally wrap this up in one last installment. It's so close to the end.

I don't even know if I want it to end, because all that's left is the sad stuff. I know shoebox can't have a happy ending. I know that.

I just want more so badly. And I want more of it including that note card that I now can't find anywhere on the internet that had a marauder's era adventure scrawled on it. DOES ANYONE ELSE REMEMBER THIS? AM I CRAZY? PLZ TO BE RESPOND.

PS: just coming here after not having updates for 2 years after the hack and I think 2 years before the hack too makes me cry literal tears, still. Still, guys.
Miss this sooo much =( Been re-reading all the PDFS. Wish we could have just one or two more chapters to wrap this up; but I know Jaida seems to have completely dissapeared from the internet, and i've no idea what Rave is up too... =(
Her "Dorkorific" account is still quite active. I just took a glance and she's still blogging and posting fic.

Just one more chapter. Please. :'(

If I didn't know how fantastic this fan fiction was, I might think it pathetic/absurd to keep up hope and continue to post comments here after two years.
I can't get myself to think that about Shoebox. With the books ended and the last of the movies coming out, there is a greater want to see this again. However, after two years, I'd settle for a concrete, "Go away, this is done."
I was reminded of this when the POA film came on TV, so I thought I'd post some best wishes. Hope I can find more of your writing around, especially if you continue to include the 'bits and bats'.

Anyway, thanks for writing and I've just copied and labelled all the pdfs to read again soon.

h xx
Miss you guys!
Any chance that this could ever be finished? You folks came so far, and then no ending. Yes, we know that the ending can't be happy, but that's the name of the game in this era. :( Just one more chapter. please? Thanks for a great read. :)

To the person upthread who linked to the pdfs, thanks!
I would also love this.
I know it's difficult though. I know what it's like, and how long it takes to sit down with someone and write thirty-some pages of something and be satisfied with it.
We all just miss and love Shoebox a lot. Even here, almost three years later, haha!
This is truly one of the greatest things, if not the greatest to ever happen in fandom. I really hope it gets tied up somehow.
Hey - I am really glad to find this. cool job!

I just wanted to leave a note saying I hope you're both doing well and that you're experiencing success and happiness. (I can see my copy of Havemercy from where I'm seated, so I know what Jaida's been up to at least.)

I can't believe how many years it's been since I first read the Shoebox Project. I will always carry it with me. This is canon for me. This is what the Marauders were really like before Harry came along and Voldemort came along. Nothing will ever change that.

Thank you for bringing these characters to life. <3
I miss this fic. Trufax. :(
I re-read Shoebox today.

Little bit of me died when I realized it's been forever since the last installment.

Miss you lots,

When this fic came out, I was working third shift at a homeless shelter and reading updates during the 3:00 hour. Shoebox kept me awake, yes, but also engaged and excited and curious. I remember feeling devastated when the frequency of the updates dropped...then stalled...then stopped altogether. I'm grateful to the authors for sharing their work, and especially for keeping this work available online even after having original fic published in RL. Every time I re-read this fic, or a part of it, I'm reminded of where I was in my life when it was being written, and I'm grateful for that, too. This was the golden era of HP fanfic, and I regard SBP as the jewel in that particular crown. There's simply nothing else like it.

I recently re-read it, and resolved to think of the last update as the Last Chapter. You know, it works. It's the happiest ending possible, I think, with James and Lily engaged and Sirius and Remus finally settling into a relationship that we all know is doomed to be too short and incredibly painful. We know Peter is the odd man out, and we get a glimpse of what drove him to the other side. It's a bittersweet ending, but it does work as an ending.

The HP era is drawing to a close. I'll miss it, but I will re-read Shoebox with the same attention, interest, and nostalgia I would give to any beloved book.
